WordPress Trackback and Pingback

What is Trackback?
Trackback, in simple words, is a method of informing another website that you have referenced it in your blog post. On the website you’ve credited, there will appear a link and short excerpt of the blog post you’ve created.
How to find Trackback Url
When you trackback, you need to use the special trackback link of the articles you intend to reference. You can usually find these links before the comments section or right below the blog post.
In case it is in hyperlink form, right click on it, and select “Copy link address”. If the link is in text form, simply highlight it and copy. Below you can find trackback addresses both as a hyperlink and text form.
Note that trackback links should be copied separately if you intend to reference several blog posts. You should also know that some blogs have their trackback turned off. If you cannot find the URL on the blog, get in touch with the blog owner and ask.
How to Send Trackback
You should configure WordPress send your trackbacks before publishing your article. Send trackbacks box is not shown by default when you edit a post. First, you should enable it by clicking on Screen Options located on the top-right corner of the WordPress post editing panel. Then, put a check mark on “Send Trackbacks“.
Now you can send trackbacks. A new box shown below will appear when you edit a post. Enter your trackback links. You can send multiple trackbacks. Keep in mind that you should separate those trackback links by space.
When you’re done entering your trackback links, you can now publish your post and the blogs you’ve referenced will be informed of your action.
What is Pingback?
Pingbacks are notifications you get from WordPress (or other Content Management Systems) when someone links to an article on your blog.
With WordPress’ buil- in pingback, you don’t need to send a trackback for the links you already linked within your content. If configured, WordPress will automatically send a pingback to other blogs that you link to. You can activate this feature,by going to Options->Discussion in the admin panel and check on the Attempt to notify any Weblogs linked to from the article (slows down posting.)
How to check whether other blogs allow ping backs
It is safe to assume that majority of WordPress sites allow for pingbacks. However, there are instances when the website owner has it moderated or turned off.

How to check whether your Pingback or Trackback request worked

Best Pingback and Trackback Practices
Don’t send pingback and trackback to the same blog. You can irritate website owners with this or give off the impression that you are attempting to spam. You should only send a trackback if you actually use their content for reference because otherwise, it’s spamming.
In case your trackbacks or pingbacks do not show on their intended sites, avoid repeating the process in the hopes it will appear after numerous tries. Just leave a comment with your blog link on the entry you’ve referenced and wait for the site’s owner to approve it.

You can set the default ping status of your WordPress site by going to the Options menu. Set it to accept trackbacks and pingbacks as this will make managing your blog easier for you, especially if your posts are trackback or pingback enabled.
